John Dowland’s music was already in his own day exceptionally popular: his work was published not only in England but throughout Europe. Dowland’s life, however, was marked by disappointments, hence his motto Semper Dowland semper dolens: always Dowland, always in pain. But although his melancholy music is best-known and loved, there was another side to Dowland. Lute legend Paul O’Dette will therefore play both the famous Lachrimae and some less well-known, cheerful lute pieces such as Mrs. Vaux’s Jigge and A Coye Joye. Tivoli Vredenburg Cloud Nine 15.00
