Michael Rafferty, chef d'orchestreMichael Rafferty est directeur musical et cofondateur de Music Theatre Wales et dirige, depuis sa création, toutes ses productions.
Music Theatre Wales joue un rôle de pionnier dans le domaine de l'opéra contemporain en Grande Bretagne et continue de travailler auprès d'un large public. Sa réputation atteint à présent une dimension internationale.
La compagnie s'est produite à travers toute la Grande Bretagne et en Europe. Plusieurs productions ont été retransmises sur la radio BBC 3, la télévision BBC 2 et ont fait l'objet d'enregistrements discographiques. En 2002, Music Theatre Wales devient la première Compagnie Associée du Royal Opera House, Covent Garden avec qui elle co-commande et co-produit régulièrement des spectacles au Linbury Theatre.
Par ailleurs, Michael Rafferty mène une carrière internationale comme chef d'orchestre : les Church Parables de Britten à l'Opéra National du Rhin, la première canadienne de Punch and Judy de Birtwistle, la partition d'orchestre de John Hardy pour le film The Life of David Lloyd George, les Songs from a Prison Diary de Veryan Weston au Festival de Jazz du Mans, et de nombreux concerts avec des orchestres et ensembles comme le BBC Concert Orchestra, le Scottish Chamber Orchestra, le London Mozart Players, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, BIT 20 Ensemble (Norvège), Musikfabrik Cologne, le Composers' Ensemble et PM Music Ensemble. Michael Rafferty a déjà dirigé des oeuvres de plus de 70 compositeurs vivants ainsi que trente productions d'opéra.
Parmi ses prochains projets, on peut retenir les premières de nouveaux opéras de Michael Berkeley, Eleanor Alberga, Huw Watkins et Aribert Reimann, ainsi que la première et une tournée de la partition du film muet The Cabinet of Dr Caligari de Lynne Plowman avec les London Mozart Players.

Proposition saison 2011-2012Lynne Plowman - Le Cabinet du Dr Caligari (2009)
Il s’agit d’un accompagnement live du film phare et muet de l’expressionisme allemand,
Le Cabinet du Dr Caligari. Réalisé par Robert Wiene en 1919, ce film culte représente l’un des premiers plus célèbres exemples du cinéma expressionniste allemand. Le décor unique et stylisé dans lequel toutes les scènes du film sont tournées, place cette oeuvre à part et lui confère une qualité théâtrale et un impact visuel qui hypnotise encore aujourd’hui.
La partition de Lynne Plowman est une bande son de musique contemporaine, originale, dynamique, et fermement structurée. Commandée et créée par le London Mozart Players, cette œuvre est écrite pour un orchestre de chambre de onze musiciens et est jouée pendant la projection du film sur grand écran.
Michael Rafferty a dirigé 10 représentations du Cabinet du Dr Caligari à la tête du London Mozart Players.
