Michael Rafferty est né à Carlisle dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Angleterre et étudie la musique et la physique à l’Université de Lancaster, ainsi que le violon auprès de Galina Solodchin et Nicholas Roth. Alors qu’il termine ses études à l’Université de Cardiff, il se passionne pour le théâtre et fait des débuts très remarqués comme chef avec The Lighthouse, l’opéra de Peter Maxwell Davies. A la suite de ce succès, il devient co-fondateur de Music Theatre Wales et demeure directeur musical de cette institution pendant plus de 25 ans, dirigeant toutes ses productions et la hissant au sommet des compagnies d’opéra contemporain britannique. Parallèlement, il poursuit une carrière de violoniste dans plusieurs ensembles de musique contemporaine.

Parmi les productions les plus remarquées de Music Theatre Wales, on peut retenir la première européenne de The Fall of the House of Usher de Philip Glass, The Martyrdom of St Magnus de Peter Maxwell Davies, la production pour BBCTV de The Lighthouse de Maxwell Davies, Punch and Judy de Harrison Birtwistle, Gwyneth and the Green Knight et House of the Gods de Lynne Plowman, Jane Eyre and For You de Michael Berkeley, In the Penal Colony de Philip Glass, Greek de Mark Anthony Turnage et The Killing Flower de Salvatorre Sciarrino. Greek remporte le ‘TMA Theatre Award’ dans la catégorie 'réalisation exceptionnelle dans le domaine de l’opéra’ au Royaume-Uni en 2011. La double production Huw Watkins / Stuart MacRae de Music Theatre Wales est nominé pour un ‘Olivier Award’ en 2013 et Ghost Patrol de Stuart MacRae remporte le ‘South Bank Sky Award for Opera’ en 2013. Michael Rafferty se produit en tournée avec Music Theatre Wales au Royaume-Uni mais aussi à l’international, comme dernièrement au Tongyeong International Music Festival en Corée en 2015.

Michael Rafferty se produit également à la tête Opéra National du Rhin dans les Church Parables de Britten, dirige la première canadienne de Punch and Judy de Birtwistle, la partition de John Hardy pour le film The Life Story of David Lloyd George, Songs from a Prison Diary de Veryan Weston (Le Mans Jazz Festival) ainsi que des programmes avec le BBC Concert Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, Scottish Opera, BIT 20 Ensemble (Norvège), Musikfabrik à Cologne, The Composers’ Ensemble et PM Music Ensemble. Pendant 10 ans il dirige le Millennium Ensemble, l’ensemble de musique contemporaine du Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Michael Rafferty a déjà dirigé les oeuvres de plus de 90 compositeurs vivants et plus de 50 productions d’opéra. Un grand nombre de ces concerts et représentations ont été retransmis à la radio et à la télévision. Michael Rafferty participe à de nombreux enregistrements comme dernièrement The Trial de Philip Glass, pour le label Orange Mountain Music. En 2016 il dirige la première mondiale de The Devil Inside de Stuart MacRae avec le Scottish Opera (nominé dans la catégorie ‘Meilleur Opéra’ aux ‘UK Theatre Awards 2016’) et qui est joué à Toronto en mars 2016. A la suite de cette production, Michael Rafferty dirige la première mondiale de Deniz Kustu de Michael Ellison avec le Hezarfen Ensemble au Festival d’Istanbul en juin 2016.

En 2010 Michael Rafferty reçoit le ‘Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award’ et en 2016 un MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) pour sa contribution à la musique au Pays de Galles.

Parmi les projets de direction d'orchestre de Michael Rafferty, Le Cabinet du Dr Caligari de Lynn Plowman a suscité énormément d'enthusiasme. Il s’agit d’un accompagnement live du film phare et muet de l’expressionisme allemand, Le Cabinet du Dr Caligari. Réalisé par Robert Wiene en 1919, ce film culte représente l’un des premiers plus célèbres exemples du cinéma expressionniste allemand. Le décor unique et stylisé dans lequel toutes les scènes du film sont tournées, place cette oeuvre à part et lui confère une qualité théâtrale et un impact visuel qui hypnotise encore aujourd’hui.

La partition de Lynne Plowman est une bande son de musique contemporaine, originale, dynamique, et fermement structurée. Commandée et créée par le London Mozart Players, cette œuvre est écrite pour un orchestre de chambre de onze musiciens et est jouée pendant la projection du film sur grand écran.

Michael Rafferty a dirigé 10 représentations du Cabinet du Dr Caligari à la tête du London Mozart Players.
